Cognitive Behaviour therapy (CBT)

was first developed by Albert Ellis in the 1950’s and further expanded by Aaron Beck in the 1960’s.

What is CBT?

CBT is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which implies that our thoughts and our behaviours affect how we feel. Central to this therapy is the ABC model. It explains how our thoughts affect how we feel. Excitement is often the result of positive thoughts whereas negative are often the result of unhelpful thoughts.

It focuses not on events and experiences that happen to us but on how we interpret them. The thoughts we choose around loss, trauma, depression and many other events determine largely how we feel. It further explains how we maintain cycles and patterns of negative thought patterns.

Why is it useful?

Research evidence suggests that CBT is effective in the treatment of depression, anxiety, phobias, post-traumatic stress, anorexia, bulimia and some personality disorders. CBT is effective in its case conceptualization and initial assessment. With accurate assessment then appropriate treatment may be designed for the client.

Availability Pro-Consult offers counselling using CBT methods and strategies especially for Depression, Anxiety, Stress and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
